What does the We Are Not the Same meme mean?

The format is a mock-superior comparison. The top caption describes an ordinary habit, and the bottom caption describes the speaker doing a similar thing in a way that's supposedly more impressive, though it's usually sillier, pettier or more chaotic. The closing line "we are not the same" delivers it with total seriousness, and the stern, well-dressed portrait sells the fake confidence. Common versions compare snack choices, gaming habits, sleep schedules or how people use their phones. It's almost always ironic: the joke is how proud the speaker is of something trivial.

Where is the We Are Not the Same meme from?

Know Your Meme traces the phrase to Twitter in August 2019, when posts comparing the author to an imagined rival ended with "we are not the same"; a tweet by @Lala_Ridley on August 6 drew over 38,000 likes. Parodies followed that fall. The format had a second wave in May 2021, when an ironic macro posted to r/im14andthisisdeep and r/Cringetopia drew more than 9,700 and 14,300 upvotes. A version using a photo of Giancarlo Esposito was posted to r/okbuddychikanery on July 6, 2021, and the format exploded on r/okbuddyretard after a September 11, 2021 post before spreading to Twitter, iFunny and Facebook.
