What does the This Is Fine meme mean?

The joke is denial. The dog is surrounded by an obvious crisis, yet he sits still, drinks his coffee and announces that this is fine. You label the fire as the problem (a deadline, an inbox, a group project) and the dog as yourself or whoever is pretending to cope. The humor works best when the problem is clearly out of control and the response is absurdly calm. It's a self-aware meme: most people post it about themselves rather than to mock someone else.

Where is the This Is Fine meme from?

The image comes from KC Green's webcomic Gunshow. The strip, known as "On Fire" (also listed as "The Pills Are Working"), was posted on January 9, 2013. In the full comic the dog keeps calmly talking until he starts to melt; the internet kept only the first two panels. Those panels were shared on 4chan in April 2013 and on Reddit's r/funny in January 2014, where one poster used them to describe university stress. From there the two-panel crop became a standard reaction to quiet disaster. In 2016 the image reached official political accounts, and Green himself drew follow-up versions of the dog for other outlets. It has stayed in steady use ever since.

Tips

Put the problem in a caption near the flames and keep "This is fine" in the speech bubble area so the original punchline stays recognizable.
Short labels read better over the busy fire background; use a white font with a dark outline.
If you only want one panel, crop to the second panel where the dog smiles; it works as a standalone reaction.
