Doakes Meme
The Doakes meme is the Dexter still of Sergeant James Doakes leaning in and staring up at another man with deep suspicion. Write what someone is claiming and what you actually think, then download a Doakes meme that says "I don't buy it" without a word.
What does the Doakes meme mean?
Doakes is the character who never trusts anyone, and this shot is pure distrust. Use it when a story is too convenient, when someone insists they're innocent, or when a friend swears they'll start the diet tomorrow. The man in the foreground is whoever is talking; Doakes is you, quietly unconvinced. Because Doakes in the series was suspicious of the main character from the start, fans also read the image as "I know what you did, I just can't prove it," which makes it a good fit for petty mysteries like a missing snack.
Where is the Doakes meme from?
The image is a screenshot from Dexter, the Showtime series. Erik King plays Sergeant James Doakes, and the man he's looking at is Carlos Guerrero, played by Rudolf Martin, during a scene at Guerrero's daughter's confirmation in the first season, which aired in 2006. Know Your Meme lists the earliest known meme use as a square-cropped version posted on X by @ExtremeBlitz__ on July 8, 2025. It was shared on Reddit the next day and kept circulating on X through July 2025, including edits that swapped Guerrero for other people.

Tips
- Caption the man in the foreground with the claim and Doakes with yourself; that's the reading most people expect.
- Keep captions on the left and top edges so Doakes's eyes stay clear, because the glare is the whole joke.
- Small, suspicious situations work better than serious accusations.
- If your friends know the show, a caption hinting that you can't prove it yet adds an extra layer.
