What does the Side Eye Dog meme mean?

Side Eye Dog stands for silent skepticism. The dog doesn't bark or argue; it just looks at you sideways, which is exactly how you react when someone says something you don't quite believe. Captions usually start with “When someone…” or quote a dubious claim directly, and the dog's face is the response. It fits white lies, sketchy offers, too-good-to-be-true promises, and friends who swear they're five minutes away. The tone is mild: not furious, just unconvinced.

Where is the Side Eye Dog meme from?

The photo shows a brown dachshund-type dog in a pink collar giving a sideways glance from a blanket. According to Know Your Meme, Redditor gooddboyy posted it to r/aww on April 23, 2015, with a caption about the dog suspecting that a “ride in the car” was really a trip to the vet. For years it drifted around Imgur and forums as an occasional reaction image. Its big moment came in 2021: a September 2021 Twitter thread of side-eyeing dogs opened with it, and later that year TikTok users adopted it as a reaction to suspicious behavior. It is also known as Dog Giving Side Eye and Capping Dog, “capping” being slang for lying.

Tips

Quote the suspicious line word for word; the dog's look works best as a reply to exact words.
Keep the text in the top strip so it doesn't cover the dog's eyes, since the side glance is the whole joke.
It makes a great reply image in group chats: the caption can be as short as the claim you're doubting.
