What does the Distracted Boyfriend meme mean?

Each person gets a label. The boyfriend is you (or someone), the girlfriend is what you're supposed to be focused on, and the woman in red is the new, shiny temptation pulling you away. So: You / your responsibilities / a new hobby. The meme is about choices and distraction, not relationships — the funnier the contrast between the dull obligation and the tempting distraction, the better.

Where is the Distracted Boyfriend meme from?

The picture is a stock photo by Spanish photographer Antonio Guillem, posted to iStock on November 1, 2015 under the title "Disloyal man with his girlfriend looking at another girl." The labelled meme began on January 30, 2017, when a Turkish Facebook page posted it with the boyfriend as Phil Collins, the girlfriend as prog rock and the other woman as pop. The format spread worldwide in August 2017, when a solar eclipse version took off on Reddit, and it was named meme of the year at the Shorty Awards in April 2018. Guillem's series includes other shots of the same models, such as a reversed "distracted girlfriend" version.

Tips

Keep each label to two or three words and place them directly on each person.
The left woman is the temptation, the man is the subject, the right woman is what's being neglected.
Use contrasting fonts or outlines so labels stay readable on the busy street background.
